Building Migration Readiness Through Google Workspace Discovery

For a confidential financial services organization, Inforedge developed an automated discovery framework to bring identity, collaboration data, application dependencies and governance into a structured view before migration.

Outcomes at a Glance

  • Developed automated discovery across core Google Workspace services.
  • Built consolidated reporting and risk-identification capabilities.
  • Established structured technical inventories and dependency analysis to support migration planning.

The Challenge

Migration planning depends on more than knowing where email and files reside. Identity relationships, shared access, business automations and governance settings can all shape the work required to move an environment responsibly.

For this financial services engagement, the discovery scope brought those elements together: users and groups, collaboration workloads, connected applications, security controls and operational dependencies. The task was to collect and organize the technical evidence needed for migration-readiness review.

Understanding the Environment

Inforedge’s project activity record documents extraction of organizational units, domains, administrator roles and assignments, calendar resources, users, groups and membership settings. Identity discovery included verification indicators and access-related attributes to support review of the environment.

The collaboration work covered Gmail mailbox counts and usage, My Drive inventories, Shared Drives and their members, file and folder permissions, storage summaries and sharing-exposure flags. Per-user and shared-drive summaries connected individual inventories with a consolidated reporting structure.

API mapping also recorded where automated discovery had limits. Those boundaries informed the manual capture and validation work, rather than being treated as complete coverage.

Automated Discovery & Engineering

The team built an execution engine designed to run discovery in resumable work slices. A state-machine runner coordinated scheduled steps, pagination, locking, logging and error handling. The request layer included retries, backoff and authentication handling.

Recovery features included smart resume, targeted re-runs, failed-item retries, state backups and a watchdog for interrupted execution. A mock API harness exercised the discovery steps on simulated data before live execution; integrity testing checked for duplicate records and counter drift after repairs.

A production discovery run was initiated and monitored through execution, trigger and extraction logs. Follow-through included correcting a Drive API timeout and updating the dashboard to display discovery data.

Security, Governance and Application Dependencies

Application discovery covered SSO/SAML configuration, OAuth-connected applications and standalone Google Apps Script projects. Script analysis examined triggers, deployments, references and external dependencies, with migration-impact classification to help organize review.

Governance assessment work included Google Vault matters and holds, license assignments, archived accounts, devices, Drive labels, organizational policies, access rules, domain configuration and delegation audit information. A governance-only refresh mode supported targeted updates without repeating every discovery step.

Automated collection was complemented by manual review of users and group aliases, Vault matters and holds, email routing, recipient forwarding, TLS, SMTP and content-compliance configurations. Sensitive tenant details and findings remain confidential.

Reporting and Migration Readiness

The reporting model used topic-specific workbooks and consolidated master summaries. The dashboard framework included KPI cards, charts, sortable and filterable tables, automatic refresh and user/shared-drive drill-downs. Plain-language explanations helped connect technical data with review questions.

The team also generated a risk register, client checklist and Looker Studio-ready reporting tabs. Together, these outputs organized inventories, dependencies and items requiring follow-up into a framework for migration-readiness discussions.

At the latest recorded update on October 23, 2026, discovery monitoring, final export consolidation and dashboard refinement were continuing. This engagement documents discovery and readiness work ahead of migration execution.

Documented Delivery Outcomes

  • Structured inventories: identity, collaboration, application and governance discovery data organized into workbooks and summary tabs.
  • Dependency analysis: integration and Apps Script assessment work recorded to support migration-impact review.
  • Reporting capabilities: an interactive dashboard framework, risk register, checklist and reporting feeds developed.
  • Operational resilience: retry, resume, monitoring and repair capabilities implemented and tested.
  • Targeted validation: manual configuration reviews complemented API-based discovery.

These are documented technical activities and reporting capabilities. Final consolidated deliverables were still being refined; the record does not establish a completed production migration or quantified financial benefits.

How We Delivered

Discovery-led

Defined data categories, mapped APIs and documented extraction limits before building the collection workflow.

Automation with recovery

Combined scheduled execution with retries, resumable processing, diagnostics and targeted repair.

Governance-aware review

Connected access, sharing, application dependencies and governance inventories with manual validation.

Reporting for review

Organized technical outputs into summaries, drill-downs, risks and follow-up questions, supported by project updates.

Visibility Before Transformation

A useful migration plan begins with an informed view of the environment. This engagement demonstrates Inforedge’s approach to building that view through structured discovery, resilient automation and governance-aware review.
